献げる

ささげる【捧げる･献げる】

1 【捧げる】 〔高く持ち上げる〕 lift [hold] sth up in both hands just above eye level.

●両手でささげる hold up in both hands

・目の上にささげる hold up above eye level

・国旗をささげて持つ hold a national flag up

・三方(_さんぼう)をささげて運ぶ carry in food on a sanbō with the latter held above eye level.

2 【献げる】 〔献上する〕 humbly give [offer]; dedicate.

●祈りをささげる say [offer, raise] a prayer 《to God》

・花束をささげる humbly give sb a bouquet (of flowers)

・黙祷(_もくとう)をささげる offer up a silent prayer

・玉串をささげる offer up a sprig of a sacred tree 《to a deity》

・君にささげる愛の歌 a love song that I offer up [dedicate] to you.

●〔著書の献辞で〕亡き父に献ぐ. Dedicated to the memory of my late father.

3 〔尽くす〕 devote; (犠牲にする) sacrifice.

●国のために命をささげる give one's life [sacrifice oneself, sacrifice one's life] for one's country

・愛のためにすべてをささげる sacrifice everything for love

・研究に一生をささげる devote [dedicate] one's (whole) life to research.
